About TTCS — History of the Chapter
The Turtle and Tortoise Care Society was founded in 1990. It was formed to serve the North Orange County and Long Beach areas after the CTTC Orange County Chapter relocated its meeting place to Chapman University. In January 1991, the Turtle & Tortoise Care Society was designated the ninth chapter of the California Turtle and Tortoise Club.
The first organizational meeting was held on January 19, 1990 at Mercury Savings in Buena Park. This meeting was attended by 25 members and presided over by acting President, Jack Smith. Acting as Secretary and Treasurer respectively, were Sandy Ververka and Helen Cain. In March 1991, we moved our meetings to Western Savings Federal Bank in Seal Beach. Our first elected officers were: President, Sandy Ververka; Vice President, Mae Smith; Secretary, Lola McAuley; Treasurer, Carmen Murillo.
We now have 195 members and usually have between 70 and 90 at our monthly meetings. We enjoy many activities as well as speakers. Show and Tell is a favorite, as is our Raffle. Fund raisers include Shows, Plant and Bake Sales and a Silent auction. We have an active Adoption Program and place many animals in new homes each year.
As of 2020, we are meeting at St. Gregory's Episcopal Church in Long Beach, on the third Saturday of each month. Visitors and their tortoises are always welcome.
